Ah, the Joy of Toddler Feedings

So, tonight's dinner was a smorgasbord of rejection. A dinner typical of my toddler.

Here is how it went:

I asked my son if he wanted a grilled cheese sandwich for dinner. It was just the two of us at home tonight, so we were going light and easy on the cooking. He said yes.

I made us both grilled cheese sandwiches. I ate mine. He took 4 or 5 bites of his and then starting spitting out each subsequent bite onto the table.

He said he wanted crackers. I asked if he wanted peanut butter on them. He said yes.

So, I gave him whole wheat crackers with peanut butter smeared in between. He ate two bites and said he didn't want any more.

He told me he wanted yogurt instead. I get the yogurt. I open the yogurt. I stir the yogurt. He refuses to take even one bite and instead dumps it out on the table.

Then he asks me for apples. He has been on a big apple slice kick lately. So, I get an apple. I slice it up. I give him the slices. He takes one bite and spits it out on the floor.

Dinner's over.

  4. LOL!!! I am right there with Michelle. My daughter knows that if she doesn't eat what I feed her, she's not getting anything else.

  5. Well, normally, the grilled cheese is all he would get. However, I felt sorry for him because he wasn't feeling well and had been crying all night, so I tried to give him what he wanted for dinner. To no avail!

  6. Oh the joys of toddler feeding! My 3 year old spits out everything, so we take her dish away. She's a banana and cheerios kick and that is all she wants. Goofy kids. Thanks for grabbing my button, watch for the post this week and leave your comment:)

  7. Ahh the joys of eating sometimes, huh? Jackson is the same way.One day he eats me out of house and home. The next three the eating , spitting out bites {that drives me CRAZY by the way}, I want 10 different things then eats nothing. I swear he was on a kick a few weeks back where all he would eat was a blueberry waffle. That counts as a fruit and grain right? lol

  8. Delaney is like this. She begs and begs for cereal. I give her cereal. She decides she wants yogurt instead. So, I eat the cereal and get her the yogurt. She decides she wants a waffle. So I eat the yogurt...and so on and so forth. No wonder I'm gaining weight. :) After several weeks of this, I've laid down new rules. She eats the first thing, or doesn't eat at all. So she screams and cries and doesn't eat at all. It's great. Good luck! :)

  9. How old is he again? Seriously, I SO know where you're coming from. One day my kid won't eat the crusts on her PB&J, the next they're totally gone before they hit the plate. :) GREAT post.

  10. kids are soooo funny! but they are sooo true to themselves opions and all! i have learned to respect when my kids shut their mouth because they are "done" no matter if it would be enough to feed an ant or me... i figure they will just eat more at the next meal! just wished i had learned that when i was little, i wouldn't have spent so much darn time and money on diets in my life! *hmmm i guess that's an important lesson lol
    cheers,

  12. Oh yes. That sounds exactly like how my toddler dinner went earlier this evening. Except that mine ended with him eating grapes while sitting on the couch and then smashing the grapes dilligently into the carpet. Good times.
